![]() Military organization and technology are examined in four societies of Upper Volta: two of these the Mossi kingdoms and the network of Samo village communities, practised warfare without reference to the new firearms available in the western Sudan in the 19th century the cases of the Marka army of Al-Hajj Al-Kari of Bousse and the Zaberma army of Babato, on the other hand, provide the historian with an interesting contrast, since both of these military systems used new weapons and new methodes of organization.
